Last Call

Last night, for the first time in a long time, I was craving a “last call.” I had enjoyed a stimulating conversation during my civic engagement course; I was feeling energized, motivated, and ready to take on the world. Ok, so maybe not that far, I didn’t want to take on the world. But I did want there to be someone special in my life that I could call and go “ok, so this was awesome,” and that special someone be there to be excited for me and wanting to ask questions and know more.

I suppose having a special someone would mean I’d need to be a little less rigid in what I want.. too bad I’m not willing to compromise. “The List” is pretty intentional. I need to work on a second list, one that embodies all the “doesn’t matter” items, like location, political affiliation, (other stuff when I think of it). But I think there needs be a second list.

Civic Engagement (and other classes)

So the quarter has started. I feel like it kind of blew in like a tornado and someone has dropped a house on me (they better not steal my shoes)...

I'm taking several classes: Civic Engagement Seminar, Role of the Advisor, Practicum, Helping Skills.

So far-- Civic Engagement is totally going to be my favorite class. While I was reading this weekend one of the articles talked about Land-Grants and I was just reading thinking about how much I LOVE Land-Grants! As I was reading I was also realizing that "civic engagement" stems much deeper than what I had originally thought. I was only skimming the surface of how far civic engagement and service learning can really expand into the classroom! I am so excited to read more and figure out how I can intersect my role within housing to civic engagement. I also now know more than I ever wanted to know about the wild rice in MN, but it might be awesome for Trivia one night... let's hope!

Practicum and Role of the Advisor are on the same night, a co-worker likes to call it "a slow moving train wreck"... and she could not have hit the nail more squarely on the head. I left class slightly frustrated and ready to quit graduate school last week. The number of people in the class, assignments, everything- really overwhelmed me. But I'm working on remembering to stay in the moment and not look too far ahead. Someone else worded it more gracefully than that right there, but I know what I mean- and that's really all that matters.

Helping Skills seems like it's going to be interesting. Plus the professor's name is Susan, last name starts with S. How can I not enjoy a class taught by another S-Squared!
